|Nanotechnology from the Deep Sea|
Three technologies called MAGIQ (Monodisperse nAnodroplet Generation In Quenched hydrothermal solution), HIP (Heat-pulse Initiated Polymerization), and SPOT (Surface Pitting Observation Technology) will be presented. MAGIQ is a novel bottom-up nanoemulsification process inspired by hot springs occurring at the bottom of the ocean. It can produce nanoemulsions within 10 seconds of processing time. HIP is a novel process for free radical polymerization. Polymers with narrow molecular weight distribution can be synthesized in less than 1 minute. SPOT is a novel sensing technology for enzymatic hydrolysis of cellulose. It is characterized by the unprecedentedly high sensitivity (hydrolysis of ~1 pg of cellulose can be detected) and throughput.
